Welcome to Team Taipei's blog! We're traveling 12 103 km from Toronto to Taipei, Taiwan to participate in Dance and the Child International Conference (daCi), and sightseeing in Hong Kong on the way. This blog follows our progress and lets our parents and friends know what we're up to as Carousel Goes Global.

Trials and Tribulations of Transportation

Today was wild.
So last night we ate at the floating restaurant which was really cool but there was a chicken head in the chicken which didn't go over well with the vegetarians. Plus everyone was jet lagged to the max so we were all totally out of it. Then we had issues getting cabs, but when we did it was hilarious. Our cabbie spoke very little English but LOVED Canada. We said we were from near Toronto and be was like SCARBOROUGH!!!!!!! OAKVILLE!!!!!!!!! OSHAWAAAAA NIAGRA FALLS CASINOOOO!!!!! COLD BRRRRRRR ICEY *snort snort* and we were all like D: it was so so funny. We went to bed at 8 and woke up around 8 this morning. After about 20 hours of trying to figure it out, we finally began our hike up the mountain... Turns out there's not really a trail going up there and we just walked all through the city in the general direction of up. Every time asked a local for directions they were like WWALKING? TO VICTORIA PEAK? HAHAHAHAHA. which gave us the idea that it's not really a done thing. After about 2 hours of that (we have literally never sweated so much in our lives) we just cabbed the rest of the way. Now by this point we were in like 20 groups because one group took the tram up the peak, Laura (Prada) cabbed by herself earlier, and then we all had to goin groups in different cabs. Our group's cab driver brought us to the wrong place which was then a blast trying to read a map (lol maps) but eventually SOMEHOW we all found each other at the peak, which was legit breathtaking. Worth the excruciating hike ;) so then we went back to the hotel and showered (yay) and then got over to Kowloon to go to the markets there and see a light show. Our group enjoys spending lots of time standing around talking about buses and such, so we did some of that and then finally took our tour bus to the markets. By then it was around 6pm and we realized we had like no time to shop before going back to the waterfront for the light show at 8, so one group went back and another stayed to do speed shopping. Someone (a sketchy source) told us that it was only a ten minute subway ride to the light show area, do at quarter to eight we started to figure that out. This is when the fun began... We were in a major rush so when we saw our train was there, we ran on, but only Heidi and Alyssa made it and the rest of us were stuck there banging on the doors which people loled at us. So there they went (they had no idea where they were going, nor did they have a phone). We got on the next train and we then realized it was The wrong train and ran off it screaming just in time. We stood there fretting about heidi for a little while (she had gotten on the wrong one as well) and then hopped on the right train. We were all freakin out about this heidi sitch when all of a sudden we look down to the end of the car and HEIDI HAD MATERIALIZED. We all started crying and laughing with joy and ran to her and i still don't know how it happened but it was hilarious and wonderful. Now by this point it was like 7:58 and we thought we might make it for the show, but then Ali's octopus card didn't work and she couldn't leave the station and the guy didn't speak English and she just about started crying but then he was just like whatever and she got out :D. Then it took us a million years to find the place to watch the lights and then we missed it by about a millisecond... But it was still awesome to see the hong kong skyline lit up at night. Finally we went back to the markets and elyse made a friend with an Indian guy who tried to get her to buy a Gucci bag but she did not succumb. It was a great day and we used Eliza in her wheelchair as a battering ram.
